Our Most Recent Shows

August 11, 2009

There’s a lot of music, and music related activity going on in my house. It has more to do with J. than me, but the fact is that we listen to and see a lot of different types of music. Some (who read this blog) might even find it strange how often we go out to see live music, with kids and without. The main reason why we joined the pool that we did, is that they have live music on the weekends. We used to, and hope to again, host a huge party in our backyard for a hundred people and several live bands.

Anyway, recently we’ve seen two great shows, and I figured this would be a good place to keep a record of them and tell all three of you about the acts.

A couple of weeks ago my mom cut her beach vacation a day short and came to stay with the girls while J. and I headed east to Norfolk, VA for a Willie Nelson/John Cougar Mellencamp/Bob Dylan show at the local minor league baseball stadium. We saw Nelson and Dylan a few years ago on a similar tour, and they’ll always be great. But I have to admit that I was more excited about Mellencamp. He brings back some 80’s music memories!

Last night we made another little trip, this time to Charlottesville to see The Big Surprise Tour. This tour includes a couple of our favorite acts, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings and Old Crow Medicine Show. The show was great. Four bands that basically had a big jam session on stage, taking turns sitting in on each other’s sets. The Charlottesville Pavilion is also a great venue, even when it’s the hottest night of the summer. J. and I love going to Charlottesville for any reason; it’s where we both went to college and we both have a lot of varied experiences and memories in that town that we never get tired of sharing.

I don’t think we have any other big shows on the calendar until September. There’s one more day of music fun planned for the pool, in the form of Reggae Day this Sunday. But I’m sure that between the two parties we’re throwing in the next month, and the clubs and other venues here in town, we’ll find some music to listen to!

I’m so jealous of Mellancamp! We recently went to a music in the park night where a cover band played some Mellancamp. It’s totally not the same, but I can pretend right?
